Volunteers Needed for Flood Cleanup Events

Snohomish County Public Works and Emergency Management staff will help flood victims clear remaining debris from their property during two volunteer Neighbor to Neighbor Flood Debris Cleanup events.  On Saturday, Feb. 7, volunteers will gather at Stocker Fields in Snohomish to then go to various homes in the area needing cleanup assistance. Volunteers are needed to pick up debris from yards and homes as well as to remove vegetation from fence lines.

On February 2nd, the Snohomish County Council approved emergency ordinance 09-006, which waives fees for residents, business owners, and public agencies faced with repairs from the storms of December and January. While waiving fees for eligible applications, the ordinance requests that county departments expedite permit application reviews for repairs from storm damage.

Homeless Count Results Show Slight Increase

Early results in the annual Point in Time homeless count show an increase in the number of people in Snohomish County without a permanent place to stay.  During Thursday’s count, more than 200 people spent the day and early evening gathering data on Snohomish County’s homeless population. This year’s total – still incomplete – was 2,202, compared to last year’s final count of about 2,154, which included an estimated 625 homeless individuals who were children under the age of 18.

Burn Ban Issued for Snohomish County

Due to stagnant weather conditions and elevated air-pollution levels, the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency has issued a Stage 2 burn ban for Snohomish and other local counties.  Stagnant conditions in the Puget Sound lowlands are expected to continue in coming days causing a rise in air-pollution levels in some areas. This Stage 2 ban is expected to remain in place until conditions improve.

Reardon nominates Mukilteo mayor to Sound Transit board

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon has nominated Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine to serve on the Sound Transit Board of Directors.  Assuming County Council confirmation, Marine will fill the vacancy left by former Edmonds City Councilwoman Deanna Dawson, whose term was set to expire Dec. 31, 2011. Marine is a member of the Community Transit board, and as such, he is eligible to serve on the Sound Transit board and represent Snohomish County.

Snohomish County’s Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is working with local communities and garbage hauling companies to clean up storm debris in neighborhoods following recent flood activity.  Residents whose property sustained flood damage are eligible for cleanup assistance by taking debris to temporary neighborhood drop-off locations or county transfer and drop-box stations.

Improved Conditions Allow Crews to Repair Breached Dike

Snohomish County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have begun plugging a 20-by-5-foot breach in the Ebey Island Slough Dike, after opting against sandbagging Thursday night due to worker safety concerns and accessibility challenges.  Early Friday morning, the Corps sent a mix of rock to the breach location and is working with Snohomish County Public Works crews to repair Thursday night’s breach.

Ebey Island Flooding Slower Than Anticipated

Officials with the Snohomish County Diking District No. 1 have decided not to sandbag a 20-by-5-foot breach in the Ebey Island Slough Dike, instead allowing the area to flood.  Residents are strongly urged to evacuate.  However, water is seeping onto the island at a slower pace than initially anticipated, and residents should decide whether to leave by Friday.

Water from the Snohomish River continued to rise and spill over levees in the Snohomish valley Thursday evening, resulting in the closure of Highway 9.  Forecasted crests on the Snohomish River at Snohomish were downgraded Thursday afternoon, and were holding steady at 33.4 feet, more than 8 feet above flood stage. Residents living in the Snohomish valley and at Ebey Island were urged to prepare homes and property for major flooding.

Forecasted crests on the Snohomish River at Snohomish were downgraded Thursday afternoon, however, residents in the Snohomish valley and at Ebey Island should prepare homes and property for major flooding.  Morning forecasts called for crests of 35 feet at Snohomish. As water tops levees in the Snohomish valley, crests are expected at 10 p.m. near 33 feet.

In response to an evening notice from the National Weather Service (NWS), Snohomish County emergency management officials urge residents to watch for urban flooding during the next several hours.  Shortly after 8 p.m., the NWS advised officials that rain was falling at a rate of one-half inch per hour in several areas of Snohomish County, increasing the risk of urban flooding.

In preparation for mid-week flooding, the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management will staff its emergency operations center beginning Wednesday morning, Jan. 7.  National Weather Service forecasts call for 5 to 10 inches of rain throughout Snohomish County, creating the likelihood of flooding on all major river systems in the county Wednesday night through Thursday evening.

Cooper Elected Council Chair

The County Council voted unanimously today to elect Councilman Mike Cooper as chair for the 2009 business year. Cooper was handily elected from the third county council district November of 2007 and took office in January of 2008. He served as Council Vice Chairman throughout his first year in office.
