Free Pet Microchipping Offered Sunday, October 10
On Sunday, October 10th, Snohomish County truly goes to the dogs (and cats too); particularly for those whose owners would rather not lose them. The first 200 Snohomish County resident dogs and cats brought to the Everett Animal Shelter starting at 10 a.m. will receive free microchip implants identifying the pet’s owner’s name and contact information, ensuring that a lost animal gets a quick ride home, instead of a trip to the local animal shelter.

New traffic safety signs clarify driving restrictions in school zones
New traffic safety signs will make driving less confusing this year in the Marysville and Lake Stevens School Districts. Snohomish County Public Works is replacing the existing “time zone” plaques at 28 locations in those areas so they will be consistent with signage in other jurisdictions around the County.

Farmers plant seeds of opportunity with county, state officials
The scene was idyllic--lavender fields, grazing cows, blue skies--when a group of prominent Snohomish County farmers gathered July 29 to drink Lavender lemonade and tell County and State officials their concerns and hopes for local agriculture. A couple of those concerns were clearly visible from Lavender Hills Farm in Marysville in the form of abandoned dairy farms and encroaching housing developments.

The Wild Sky bill, H.R. 822, is sponsored by Congressman Rick Larsen (D-Everett) and encompasses some 106,000 acres, much of it in Councilman Sax’s district.

Council acts to restore fund balance
The Snohomish County Council took quick action this morning to insure the county remains on a sound financial basis. The council unanimously passed a motion declaring financial stability as a high priority for county government and requested the county executive develop a plan to restore the fund balance to 11%. The fund balance is essentially the government’s savings account.

Assessor Mails Notices of New Property Values for 2005 Taxes
Change of value notices mailed on Monday by the Assessor’s office to Snohomish County property owners will reveal the new assessed values as of January 1, 2004 for taxes payable in 2005. Over 250,000 real property parcels were reviewed and revalued, although some properties remained the same. This is the first year for annual revaluations in Snohomish County, which was previously on a 4-year revaluation cycle.

County Executive Invites Citizens To Participate On Board Of Equalization
Snohomish County residents with knowledge of property values are invited to submit their nominations for appointment to the county’s Board of Equalization. Nominations are due by Feb. 27. The Board of Equalization reviews appeals to assessed valuation of real and personal property. Currently, the board reviews 500 to 1,000 appeals annually and the time commitment is about one full day per month.
