Old and New bridge New bridge
Ribbon-cutting Ceremony Held
A Ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of this new bridge was held May 18, 2009. The event took place at the bridge on Sauk Prairie Road near Darrington and included elected officials, community members and the project team.
Project Description
Bridge #414 crosses the Sauk River on Sauk Prairie Road approximately one mile northeast of Darrington. The original bridge was a 2-lane steel and timber structure built in 1930. At the time of construction its 18-foot width accommodated the narrow vehicles of the day. In 2005, however, the bridge was identified for replacement since it was no longer adequate for wider modern vehicles and it did not meet the County's updated bridge standards.
Construction of the replacement bridge began in 2008 and was finished in 2009. The new bridge is the county's longest 2-span steel truss bridge at 480 feet, and its 34-foot width is almost twice the width of the original structure. The foundation is planted 100 feet deep into the soil at the bottom of the river.
Building the bridge was a unique challenge. The trestle had to be built on one side of the river and rolled into place next to the old bridge. New approach roads have been built to tie into each end of the new structure. Once the new bridge was far enough along to be opened to traffic the old bridge was lifted out of the river.
