Carter Road - Lockwood Road Intersection - (#RC1602)

Background

The Carter Road / Lockwood Road intersection is located just north of the King County line in unincorporated Snohomish County. The area has been transitioning from semi-rural to urban as more people move into the area, and traffic volumes increase.

Lockwood Elementary School is located just north of the intersection and students from nearby Kenmore Junior High walk through the intersection on their way to and from school.

A Snohomish County Public Works project during 2009 raised the level of Lockwood Road in front of Lockwood Elementary School and added a sidewalk.

Currently the Lockwood Road/Carter Road intersection is controlled by four stop signs. Snohomish County has reviewed the traffic patterns in the area and is proposing to revise the intersection to a roundabout. Roundabouts have several advantages over signalized intersections and stop signs, but safety is the most important.

Roundabout intersections have been installed near schools in other parts of the country with great success. Often residents are opposed to changing intersections to roundabouts until after the roundabouts are installed and residents experience the advantages of less idling and improved safety. For more information about roundabouts visit the county's web page on roundabouts.

Construction is tentatively planned for 2013.
