20th Street SE Corridor Improvement Project
(US 2 Trestle to S. Lake Stevens Rd.)
and SR9/20th St SE Project
The 20th St SE corridor is a major east-west travel route that Snohomish
County is widening from two to four lanes to improve capacity. Between
91st Avenue SE and S. Lake Stevens Road there will also be a center
turn lane for left-turning vehicles. New sidewalks will provide opportunities
for walking. Bike lanes, bus pull-outs, a storm drain system and several
new traffic signals are also included in the design.
2/3/10 Update:
WSDOT received comments from many citizens about planned turn restrictions at the
SR9 and S. Lake Stevens Road intersection and has responded by not restricting the
planned left turn from northbound SR9 to westbound S. Lake Stevens Road at this time. WSDOT will also continue to allow left turns from eastbound S. Lake Stevens Road to northbound SR9, but will monitor the intersection and make changes in the future
if necessary.
1/22/10 Update:
94th Dr. SE is closed at 20th St. SE during construction of the north side of the corridor.
The closure will last into the spring. Work includes lowering 94th Dr. SE at 20th St. SE
approximately three feet, building several retaining walls, and installing a storm drainage
system. Left turns from 20th St SE onto SR9 will be prohibited through May 2010.
The SR9 portion of the project is 95% complete. The contractor is placing extruded asphalt
curb this week. Roadway channelization will proceed as weather permits. The new signal
at the 20th St SE/SR9 intersection will be completed as soon as the 20th St SE legs of the intersection are finished this summer.
Ongoing Traffic Impacts
Single lane closures and intermittent lane shifts are in effect on 20th Street SE to allow Snohomish County Public Works and various utility companies to work on a corridor improvement/road widening project between the SR 2 trestle and 106th Avenue SE.
Lane shifts will be allowed between 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Lane closures will be allowed between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Drivers can expect bumpy roads and periodic delays of up to 15 minutes through the construction area and are advised to use alternate routes when possible. We apologize for the inconvenience as we work to remodel and improve 20th Street SE.
| Project Description
Vehicle and bicycle lanes, sidewalks and bus "pull-outs" are being added to 20th Street SE. New traffic signals will also be installed at several intersections. HOV lanes are planned between Cavalero Road and 91st Ave SE for westbound traffic during the morning commute. These changes are designed to improve traffic safety and travel time.
Snohomish County has also partnered with Community Transit to reduce traffic congestion. Learn about the incentive for trying a bus or vanpool at . . . Curb the Congestion

State Route 9 Snohomish County is managing the Washington State Department of Transportation's project to improve SR9 between 20th St SE and S. Lake Stevens Road. For more information about WSDOT's SR9 corridor improvement projects, visit the WSDOT project page |
