Adopt-A-Road Program |
Help Keep Our County Beautiful
Snohomish County’s Adopt-A-Road Program is a roadside clean-up campaign designed to remove litter along county roadways, enhance the quality of our environment, and promote community pride. The program establishes a partnership between volunteer groups and Snohomish County Public Works. Community groups sign up to remove litter along “adopted” sections of county road. In recognition of their efforts, Public Works installs two Adopt-A-Road signs with each group’s name along their adopted section of road.
How does it work?
When a volunteer group signs up with the program, its members agree to remove litter from their adopted section of county road at least twice a year for a two-year period. Each group must have a designated leader; who completes the required paperwork, organizes clean-up events, ensures that clean-ups are conducted in a safe manner, and acts as the group’s contact person with the county. The group leader must be 18 years of age or older.
Public Works provides safety training for group leaders, safety-training materials for volunteers, safety equipment and supplies for clean-up events, and two roadside recognition signs that are installed after the group’s first clean-up event.
The group leader schedules a clean-up event with the Adopt-A-Road Coordinator one week in advance to reserve a Safety/Clean-up Kit. After the clean-up is completed, the group leader sends in an activity report (Participant Roster) and other forms to the coordinator. Public Works picks up and disposes of the filled litter bags.
Who can participate?
Individuals, families, civic organizations, service clubs, churches, businesses, and other organizations can participate in the program.
Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. There must be one adult supervisor for every eight minors participating in a clean-up event. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have parental consent to participate in the program, and the parent or guardian must sign the Parent/Guardian Informed Consent Form.
A volunteer organization is not eligible to participate in the program if its name:
- Endorses or opposes a particular candidate for public office;
- Advocates a position on a specific political issue, initiative, referendum, or piece of legislation; or
- Includes a reference to a political party.
