Nina Lake

Nina Lake lies west of Interstate 5 just north of the Tulalip Reservation.  The lake is man-made—it was excavated in the 1970s.  It is 14 acres, and is divided into two distinct basins separated by a shallow sill.  The east basin is shallow—about 4.0 meters deep—while the larger west basin is relatively deep at 12.0 meters.  Nina Lake's watershed totals just 36 acres and consists of only the homes and streets that immediately encircle the lake.  Nina Lake has no public access.

Water Quality Information

Summary

Nina Lake has moderate to high water clarity, low to moderate phosphorus levels, and high plant productivity in shallow areas.  Water clarity has declined in recent years, which is a sign of increasing eutrophication.  The lake may be at risk of future declines in water quality unless nutrient runoff from the surrounding homes is controlled.

Reports

A comprehensive Snohomish County State of the Lakes Report was produced in 2003 and includes a specific section on Nina Lake.  Individual lake updates to this report are provided each year as new data are collected.

Data

Snohomish County Surface Water Management (SWM) together with volunteer lake-monitors have been collecting water quality data for Nina Lake since 1999.  Current and historical lake water quality data are available online in SWM's interactive Water Quality Database.

Nina Lake Maps

  • Bathymetric Map - this map shows contour lines of equal depth similar to a topographic map.  Public access sites are also indicated on each map when applicable.
  • Aerial Photo - 2007 aerial photos of the lake with relevant features such as public access sites and nearby roads.
  • Watershed Map - this map shows the boundary of the Nina Lake watershed.  A watershed is the land area that drains into the lake.
