Lake Riley

Located in the Cascade Mountain foothills about 10 miles northeast of Arlington, Lake Riley is a bog lake.  Lake Riley is 30 acres in size, with a maximum depth of 13.7 meters.  The lake’s watershed is relatively small (273 acres) and is largely undeveloped.  There is a public boat launch near the south end of the lake.

Water Quality Information

Summary

Lake Riley appears to be in healthy condition, with moderate nutrient levels, moderate amounts of algae, and dense aquatic plants.  Water clarity is low, mainly because the lake is a bog with darkly colored water.  Maintaining the health of the lake depends on controlling nutrients from future development and from timber harvest in the surrounding watershed.

Reports

A comprehensive Snohomish County State of the Lakes Report was produced in 2003 and includes a specific section on Lake Riley.  Individual lake updates to this report are provided each year as new data are collected.

Data

Snohomish County Surface Water Management (SWM) together with volunteer lake-monitors have been collecting water quality data for Lake Riley since 1994.  Current and historical lake water quality data are available online in SWM's interactive Water Quality Database.

Lake Riley Maps

  • Bathymetric Map - this map shows contour lines of equal depth similar to a topographic map.  Public access sites are also indicated on each map when applicable.
  • Aerial Photo - 2007 aerial photos of the lake with relevant features such as public access sites and nearby roads.
  • Watershed Map - this map shows the boundary of the Lake Riley watershed.  A watershed is the land area that drains into the lake.
