Salmon Watch in the Classroom
Knowing that most classrooms don't have the ability to attend an evening training session or the time to visit a salmon spawning creek twice a week, Surface Water staff work with interested teachers to develop a customized Salmon Watch program that will fit into the classroom schedule. Training is done in the classroom during normal school hours. The Salmon Watch experience varies depending on access to a spawing creek - for some this means visiting their Salmon Watch site once a week, for other classrooms the Salmon Watch experience may only be one field trip.
Most teacher who participate in the Salmon Watch in the Classroom program have attended our annual Fall Salmon workshop for teachers. This workshop gives educators many ideas for using the Salmon Watch experience as a theme to integrate math, writing, communication, science, and even history, civics and other subjects.
The following is an example of a classroom project that grew from the Cedar Wood Elementary Salmon in the Classroom program. Wait until you see these brochures designed and written by fourth and fifth grade students from Dianne Lundberg and Susan Wood's Cedar Wood Elementary classes. We distributed the brochures to the public at our 2004 Sockeye Salmon Watch event.
Thank you to Dianne, Susan, and their Cedar Wood Elementary 4th and 5th grade students!
