Native Plant Program

Utilizing community volunteers and with the support of a Washington Conservation Corps crew, the Native Plant Program installs approximately 20,000 plants per year in riparian (streamside) zones throughout Snohomish County. Native Plants not only give us cleaner air, but also prevent flooding and erosion, improve water quality, create fish habitat, and play a crucial role in stream ecology.  Check the Calendar to see when the next planting or salvage is scheduled.

Where the plants come from

The Snohomish County Native Plant Nursery, located in Lake Stevens, serves as a holding facility for plants used for restoration sites. Learn about what plants are in the nursery, the difference between native plants and invasive plants, and planting tips. Link to Vegetation Monitoring Manual.

How you can participate

The Native Plant Program trains volunteers to identify, salvage, and plant native trees and shrubs. Volunteers play a large role in helping restore and maintain stream quality in Snohomish County. Volunteers can participate in plantings and salvages which are typically held in late fall and early spring. No experience or training is needed to participate. Check the Calendar to see when the next planting or salvage is scheduled.  See all the fun at a typical native plant event.

Classes available

Partnering with the Washington Native Plant Society, the Native Plant Program offers a stewardship-training program for citizens interested in learning more about native plants. This 100-hour course is offered every fall and runs for 10 weeks.

Stewards learn basic plant identification and classification, study Pacific Northwest soils and ecosystems, experience restoration projects and learn about uses of native plants including wildlife landscaping, gardening with natives and ethnobotany. After completion of the coursework, stewards contribute 100 hours of volunteer plant related service to Snohomish County, Washington Native Plant Society or community projects. This is where the true learning begins!
