Surface Water Management
Salmon & Watersheds
Different species of salmon use different parts of a watershed at different times in their lives. For example, Chinook salmon generally spawn in the mainstems of rivers and are seldom seen spawning very far up tributary streams. Different species of salmon will also spend longer or shorter amounts of time in freshwater streams before heading out to sea. Knowing what types of fish use different a particular part of a watershed provides a clearer picture of the types of habitat projects to complete in that area. Also, knowing the habitat preferences of different species affects the distribution of fish around a watershed, which is one of the factors used to determine whether a population of salmon is healthy or not.
The maps shown below are by watershed. If you do not know what watershed you wish to view, or in which you live, please visit this page.
