Workshop Description
- Looking for tips to help your students conduct interesting inquiry-based investigations?
- Are your students stymied when they try to define a question that can be tested using the scientific method?
- Do your students have trouble identifying the manipulated/changed variable vs the responding/measured variable vs the controlled variables?
- Can their procedures be repeated?
The Restoration Ecology for Young Stewards or REYS project has given us the opportunity to work out strategies for teaching these concepts and other challenges related to teaching inquiry-based science and we’re excited to share REYS ideas with you!
This 3-day classroom and field-based workshop will introduce educators to INQUIRY SCIENCE concepts used in the REYS project. The REYS program includes eight lessons. Some lessons provide students with Science EALR 1 - Concepts and Principles and other lessons focuses on EALR 2 – Inquiry.
This workshop will show teachers how field observations can be used to generate general questions that form the basis for specific questions that can be tested in a scientific manner. During the workshop we’ll walk you step-by-step through the REYS activities and show you how our 4th-10th grade students used the scientific process to set up 11 real-world experiments that will answer questions such as: “How does the depth of mulch affect the growth of invasive reed canary grass?” and “How does plant diversity affect growth?”
Don’t have a stream handy? Don’t worry. The REYS concepts can be adapted to many other topics. Join us for this three-day (22 clock-hour) workshop and learn how the REYS inquiry science concepts can be applied in your classroom.
Who Should Attend the Inquiry Science & Stream Restoration Workshop?
