Snohomish River Esturary

Background

Situated in the heart of Snohomish county, and adjacent to its largest city, Everett, lies the Snohomish River Estuary. This unique place is where the nutrient rich waters of Snohomish River come in contact with the saltwater of Possession Sound.

The overlapping of fresh and salt waters creates a productive ecosystem and is home to an abundance of wildlife. At least 350 different kinds of birds and countless varieties of mammals and plants call this special place home, including blue heron, eagles, osprey, seals and otter.

The Estuary is not only important for wildlife, it also benefits people by acting as a natural filter that cleans water before it passes to Possession Sound and even slows floodwaters.

Other natural conditions, like the calm water of its sloughs and scenic views of the Cascade Mountains, create a most enjoyable environment for pursuing outdoor recreation activities in Snohomish County. Visitors have the opportunity to fish, hike, bike and kayak all within an area that is no more than 19.5 square miles.
