Application Requirements:

Applicants must submit a completed Civil Service Application and Supplemental Questionnaire to the Civil Service Commission. Applicants must also submit documentation of successful completion of a state basic law enforcement academy.  Applications will be screened for completeness and to determine that all minimum qualifications are met. If acceptable, qualified applicants will be mailed a written test packet by certified mail. Completed test packets must be returned to the Civil Service Office within 14 days from the date of receipt. Late test packets will result in elimination from the testing process. The minimum passing score for the written portion of the test is 60%. All candidates who receive a passing score will be added to the eligibility list for this position. The duration of eligibility will be one year from the date the name is placed on the list. The eligibility list will continually be modified throughout the testing process.

Additional screening prior to appointment will include, but is not limited to, a complete background investigation, criminal record check, fingerprinting, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, pre-employment drug screening and a medical evaluation.

Applicants will be notified by mail of their score on the written test. Placement on the list is subject to change throughout the testing process.

Completed application packets must be returned to the Civil Service Office. Incomplete or unsigned applications or supplemental questionnaires will be returned which will delay the testing process. Limit resumes and/or additional information to three (3) pages or less.

Essential Job Duties:
  • Patrol a designated area of the County; investigate crime scenes; enforce traffic and parking ordinances; render public services as needed.
  • Respond to reports of possible crime and take action as required; interview victims and witnesses; gather evidence and arrest suspects; complete reports.
  • Issue citations to violators of state laws and county ordinances; serve warrants of arrest for misdemeanor and felony charges; handcuff and search arrested persons and secure their custody.
  • Interview citizens making complaints; respond to citizen’s inquiries; give information on laws and ordinances.
  • Operate a radar unit to discover speed violations; search for and identify stolen vehicles; check violator drivers for records of outstanding arrest warrants.
  • Guard prisoners at hospitals and in court; transport prisoners to jail.
  • Testify in court as needed.
  • May perform specialized duties based on the individual’s background and ability.
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED certificate. Must be US citizen, at least 21 years of age, no maximum age. Must have been employed as a full time, paid, fully commissioned sworn officer in a civilian law enforcement agency for at least 12 of the last 24 months, and must provide documented successful completion of a state basic law enforcement academy.  Completion of the Equivalency Academy is required within one year from date of hire if the applicant is not already certified in the State of Washington.  Experience as a Tribal Officer will be considered provided all the above requirements are met.

 This qualification must be met at the time of application. Reserve experience is specifically excluded from consideration for meeting the minimum qualifications. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Washington State Driver’s License, unrestricted except as to vision, is required prior to appointment.

An associate of arts degree or 90 credits of college level course work in a law enforcement related field is preferred.

Special Qualifications:
Must be willing to work shifts, holidays and weekends, in uniform, out of doors, in all types of weather.
