40 hours per week plus overtime as needed

Essential Job Duties:

 

1.      Provides comprehensive primary health care services with responsibility for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of patients, within scope of licensing and qualifications; develops health care plan according to established standards of care in a correctional setting. 

2.      Provides medical treatment and advice to patients as may be indicated; prescribes and/or administers medications; secures case history and related pertinent information; examines patients, utilizes laboratory and other diagnostic tests, interpreting findings for diagnosis; diagnoses ailment(s) and performs necessary treatment and follow‑up treatment as may be indicated and within scope of qualifications license. 

3.      Refers patients with serious medical conditions to contract physician or hospital if indicated or refers for consultation to medical, surgical or other adjunct services. 

4.      Maintains clinical records on all patients seen in a manner consistent with confidentiality of health care records guidelines and department regulations protocol.

 

STATEMENT OF OTHER JOB DUTIES 

5.      Consults with the Programs Administrators or Registered Nurse Supervisor, family, contract Medical Professionals, staff and other outside providers as may be necessary. 

6.      Provides instruction, guidance or in‑service training to other clinic and detention staff as appropriate. 

7.      Participates in organizing and directing preventive health programs approved by the Programs Administrator such as programs to facilitate optimal health, disease detection and prevention, and management of common illnesses as necessary. 

8.      Participates in developing and determining standards of care and goals of the Medical Unit as well as the development and implementation of a quality assurance program as needed. 

9. Participates in a shared on‑call system with other providers as scheduled. 

10. Participates in‑management/departmental meetings as requested. 

11. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:

  • blood/airborne pathogens and universal precautions for personnel safety;
  • professional nursing principles and concepts;
  • medications and expected action and side effects;
  • body physiological and anatomical systems;
  • laboratory values and their meaning;
  • basic principles of program planning, organization and implementation;
  • mental health, drug abuse, and alcohol treatment systems;
  • principles and practices of correctional facility safety and security.

 Ability to:

  • read, interpret and apply work related laws, rules and regulations;
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and to prepare required reports;
  • analyze and solve work related problems and make decisions under pressure;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with county employees and the general public.
Minimum Qualifications:

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (A.R.N.P.) must have completed a formal nurse practitioner program and be certified for advanced practice in the State of Washington; AND, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related health care field and one year experience required; current Washington A.R.N.P. licensure with prescriptive authority; AND, experience in Community Clinic setting, with demonstrated ability to relate effectively with people of varied backgrounds. Must be a United States citizen.  Past experience in correctional health care preferred.  Must pass job related tests.

Special Requirements:

Candidates must successfully pass a criminal history background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation and pre-employment drug screening.  A valid Washington State Driver's License, unrestricted except as to vision, will be required prior to appointment.  Candidates must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application; no maximum age.

 

Employees may be required to restrain, lift or move inmates for emergency medical purposes. Physical assessments require good hear­ing, vision and hand‑eye coordination (looking in ears, listening to chest, giving injections and drawing blood).

 

Supervision:

Employees perform assigned duties independently under the guid­ance of the Health Services Administrator.

 

Working Conditions: 

The work is performed in a maximum security adult detention facility.  Employees may be required to work weekends, swing shift and holidays as assigned. Requires the handling of blood and contaminated sharps.

 

Testing Process:  Oral board interviews will be scheduled for qualified applicants and will be conducted on a continuous basis throughout the advertising period.  Candidates who score 70% or higher will be placed on an eligibility list for this position.
