On Sunday, December 16th, Bernie Webber passed away. Bernie was an Everett native and a Snohomish County icon. He had a tremendous talent for illuminating the history of the County through watercolor artwork and many of his pieces can be found throughout the County buildings. Not only was Bernie an accomplished artist, but also a friend and mentor to many. He had a generous heart and truly left an imprint on the people of this County through his years of contribution to charitable causes. Bernie was a great friend and will be missed. In honor of Bernie Webber’s achievements and dedication, and in memory of his lifelong commitment to Snohomish County, Executive Aaron Reardon and the County Council declare December 22 as Bernie Webber Remembrance Day.

Executive Aaron Reardon has declared a state of emergency in Snohomish County after last night’s wind storm scattered debris throughout the County, led to road surface flooding, and caused 120,000 residents to lose power.

On Monday, December 18 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds the agriculture community will be able to participate in a hands-on biodiesel training and demonstration. Farmers will be educated on the benefits of using biodiesel and biodiesel production. The seminar is funded by a $50,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to host four seminars throughout Washington. There will be no charge to attend the presentation, but space is limited.

County Executive Aaron Reardon and the County Council are partnering with local cities on another initiative to preserve farmland. The county was awarded a $100,000 grant from the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development for a program that takes development pressure off of local farms and concentrates development in existing urban areas.

Elected officials and community leaders are invited to attend the Countywide Youth Summit on Tuesday, November 28, 2006, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Public Utilities Department (PUD) Auditorium in Everett (2320 California Street). A Community Leader Reception (featuring the musical talents of the Marysville Junior High Marimba Ensemble) and sign-in will begin at 6:30pm.

Snohomish County is offering individuals faced with the aftermath of a flood clean-up, aid in the form of free waste disposal at County transfer stations for water-damaged household goods. These vouchers will be available for pick-up at five locations in Snohomish County.

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon will lead a celebration on Thursday, October 26, to praise the collaboration of the County’s Planning and Development Services Department (PDS), Department of Information Services (DIS) and local building contractors for the success of the County’s new online contractor services. The event will also mark the official launch of these new and improved services to the entire building contractor industry.

Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon today announced that construction has begun on the first of 46 new road, parks and surface water management projects as part of a major community infrastructure development initiative to keep ahead of the County’s rapid growth. The 91st Avenue SE walkway safety project in the Lake Stevens area kicks off the three-year, $50 million Community Infrastructure Development Initiative four months earlier than expected.

The Snohomish County Council today confirmed John Pennington as the Director of the County’s new Department of Emergency Management (DEM). Pennington, who most recently served as FEMA Director, Region X of Homeland Security had been acting as Director of DEM since July 13, after having been appointed to that position by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.

Executive Reardon signs County’s first Apprenticeship Ordinance into law
Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon today signed into law the County’s first Apprenticeship Ordinance. The ceremonial signing took place at 10 a.m. this morning at an event held at the Everett Labor Temple in downtown Everett. The Apprenticeship Ordinance sets County goals for apprentice labor at 15 to 20 percent on County construction projects costing more than $1 million, including roadwork.

Snohomish County’s New Comprehensive Plan Now in Effect
The Snohomish County Comprehensive Plan, which serves as the guide for development in the County, was recently updated through the year 2025. The updated Plan is effective Wednesday, Feb. 1, and replaces the 1995 Plan as the reference point for new development applications.
