Recovery & Mitigation Program
Recovery and Mitigation, while seemingly at opposite ends of the emergency management spectrum, are actually very heavily intertwined. Because efforts in both of these categories present opportunities to improve community resilience and sustainability, the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management ensures consistency and continuity by coalescing these under one program.
Recovery is a process that, depending on the severity of the disaster, may take days to years to accomplish. The goal of Snohomish County DEM's recovery efforts is to coordinate effectively with other local, State, and Federal partners, thereby enabling individuals and communities (affected by disasters of all sizes) to recover with minimal suffering or disruption of services.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimates that every dollar spent on mitigation results in four dollars in future benefits and savings from increased disaster resistance. The Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management, in coordination with the Washington State Emergency Management Division, numerous other County departments and multiple jurisdictions, works diligently to reduce our Citizen's vulnerabilities to disasters by advocating cost-effective mitigation activities.
