Career Opportunity: Registered Nurse
Nursing in a correctional facility is unlike any other career normally experienced in the health care field. The nurses provide a wide variety of services including distributing medication, performing physical assessments, evaluating inmates for their fitness to be booked and responding to emergencies. It takes a special person to succeed as a nurse in a jail.
Nurses are first responders to medical emergencies within the facility. They must be able to work without the immediate direction of a physician following established protocols. In addition, corrections nurses operate in the unique working environment of a jail, requiring good communication skills, compassion, and an awareness of unique operational security considerations.
