Career Opportunity: Custody Officer
The job of a Custody Officer is challenging and rewarding. Snohomish County Corrections operates direct supervision facilities which requires the officers to interact directly with inmates. The successful officer will have above average communication skills, be able to make sound decisions, and be able to maintain their composure in emergency situations. They must have the ability to be firm but fair with the inmates they are charged with supervising. They have the ability to be a counselor one moment and a disciplinarian the next. The duties a Custody Officer performs are varied. They include booking inmates into the facility, releasing inmates, supervising the housing modules, transporting to courts and medical appointments and responding to emergencies in the facility.
Custody Officers at Snohomish County Corrections are required to pass an extensive background investigation including a polygraph. They must be able to pass a physical ability test as well a medical exam. Every officer must successfully complete the Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Officer Academy which is a four week course. They also must complete a six week on the job training program with a Field Training Officer.
